This poem is 26 lines long. Each letter of he alphabet represents a figure in Black History. It can be used as a performance piece for Black History Month assemblies, or, of course, any time of the year. The rhymes are in couplets, and the lines are simple - a letter, and then no more than 5 words for each line! This poem can be performed by students at any grade level.
As a performance piece, it can be enhanced with costumes, movement, posters, etc., to bring forth the characterization. It can be sung, rapped, chanted, or it can be performed in a choral style. Two children can recite two lines together, or any combination of students that is deemed effective!
The poem should be said slowly, in order for the children to enunciate names which with they may have no familiarity!
Excellent performance piece with low-teacher input.
