Product Description
This product makes learning fun! My students love these activities!

Goals and Purposes:

Learning to Alphabetize: Understanding alphabetical order is just one of those things everyone is expected to do. This critical skill is a launching point that helps students to later use and create nonfiction features like the Glossary and Index, and to use resource materials like the dictionary and thesaurus. It’s a fun vocabulary and sorting activity to add to other units as well!

Learning more spelling sounds and patterns: Learning alphabetical order puts focus on initial consonant sounds and helps students pay more attention to within word patterns. The “Alphabet war” cards have pictures of the words to help beginning readers and ELL students have access to the vocabulary.

Learn Tier III vocabulary, while learning a skill: I chose to stick mostly to one theme with this unit to help students learn some Tier III vocabulary like carnivore and herbivore while they practice the skill. This also helps them to learn animal names and practice scientific categorization.

Learn and practice multiple strategies Just like in math, students need to learn multiple strategies to increase their understanding of a concept and find/ develop a system that works best for them. At the end of the unit I provide three different strategies students can use to help them organize information and then let them pick or develop their own to use for the last page.

Have Fun: Not everything has to be a worksheet or a grade. Playing games and creating art are fun and engaging ways to learn! Not to mention you get to be in the moment with your students playing with them!
