Birthday parties are loaded with communication possibilities, but also with the possibility of the student being overwhelmed, anxious, and withdrawn or overstimulated.
Playing birthday party allows the student an opportunity to try out some appropriate messages and to get familiar with the party routine.
Birthday parties often begin with a game or other fun activity.
For purposes of this teaching activity we are going to assume a basic game sequence at home, followed by cake and ice cream and then opening of presents.
A social script type story is included, practice with sequencing the activities, and practice with things to say.
There are 2 sequencing activities: What Do I Do? and What Can I Expect?
Have students role play an entire birthday party with the props included. Practice giving the birthday child a present, play a game, “eat” cake, watch the opening of presents (box template and “gifts” included, get a “goodie bag,” and leave.
There are also 3 worksheet-type activities to practice specific core words.
