Classic activity; modified from the FOR-PD online course, using the "ABC" graphic organizer. Use a timer to set the pace and a competitive vibe in the classroom. Students can talk about their words afterwards. I use this right after a break from school or during the standardized testing schoolwide modified schedule, mid-novel; when it is likely that students might have lost track of the events in the book. Essentially, students are given a finite amount of time to write words that begin with specified letters of the alphabet that relate to the novel. Similar to a word-splash, but a little more structured. Lends itself to competition and rewards/compliments from the teacher and other students.
