Introduce alphabetical order to first grade students with differentiated sorting activities. Begin with a printable poster as a springboard to creating a class anchor chart. Move on to sorting cards for more concrete understanding of ABC order. Beginning and intermediate activities help students to expand their understanding from simple sorting by beginning letter, to the second letter and finally to the third letter. Extra practice with more differentiated independent review worksheets included, perfect for word work in reading and writing centers.
On the left side you’ll see an easy version of ABC order, and on the right a more challenging version.
Differentiated with three levels. Print on cardstock for durability and repeated use. Focus begins with just sorting the first letter, but could easily introduce adding in the second or third letter.
Differentiated with three levels. Easy introduction to alphabet order using only two letters. Level 1 students will cut and sort the pictures into their A or B section, then glue down. Levels 2 and 3 will write the words in order. Teacher helps students to focus on just the first letter.
Differentiated with three levels. A little more tricky, students will need to put the words into order beyond just the first letter. Level 1 students will have to sort by the first 2 letters, but not be held to the entire word spelling. Level 2 will have hints with portions of the word in each section, with Level 3 not given any hints at all.
Differentiated with three levels. Students will practice working on ABC order with tasks on each worksheet. Students should be able to work on these individually if given their level. Look in the bottom corner for L1 (low), L2 (medium), L3 (high).
