This is a year-long research project allowing students to choose research topics that interest them. The writing assignments are scaffolded throughout the year to help students expand their informational writing abilities naturally.
With this project the students will be able to choose weekly topics and write informational pieces about their new research. Students will also create an ABC research book from the final pages of each week.
I taught this year-long project a few years ago, and the students loved it. Because of curriculum changes I had to shelf it for a couple years. This year I have revamped it, and I am so excited to start up again!
A veteran teacher may want to try something new with research instead of a quarter long research paper. A new teacher may see this as a lifesaver when it comes to planning a research unit based on the standards. I hope you find this to be an excellent resource!
This unit was created for grades 6-9. I used the 7th grade CCSS when aligning because that is what I teach. However these could easily be replaced with the anchor standard or grade level standard.
This unit includes the following:
• ABC Research Book one pager explanation for teachers and students
Teacher Tips to have a successful year-long project
• Student interest page
• Notes page for research days
• Easy MLA Citation Guide
• Grading Rubric
• Project fully aligned to the Common Core ELA Standards
I hope you find this to be a useful resource for your middle school ELA classroom!
