The ACCESS Idea Sort is a strategy used to introduce you to the vocabulary and / or concepts of a new topic or book. Instructors provide you with a list of terms or concepts from reading material. Ideas are placed in categories based on meanings. Categories may be defined by the instructor or by you. By using this strategy before reading, instructors can evaluate background knowledge. When the technique is used after reading, instructors can assess comprehension. This strategy is effective when used with fiction and nonfiction text.
