This quick and easy resource is something that I developed to provide my students with a visual cue during our class discussions, read alouds, and Socratic seminars. Just print out (I printed mine on Astrobright paper for extra pizazz), cut around the speech bubble shape, and hot glue to a pencil, ruler, or popsicle stick.

How to use:
-During discussions, I have a pink speech bubble and pass out four orange speech bubbles to various students
-Any time divisive, partisan, or un-inclusive language is utilized, students (and myself) hold up the speech bubble as a visual cue to rephrase the original statement
Why it works:
-This has transformed my classroom culture! Students don't fear "being called out" by their teacher or their peers--this quick visual cue is an easy way to redirect the content of discussion without taking away from too much time
-During our reading, we also use this visual cue to make sure we are aware of divisive language that characters may be using--this serves as a great point for discussion about the power of language
-Use Astrobright cardstock for extra durability! I would typically laminate my resources but I used cardstock and I'm fully confident these will last me through this unit and beyond with my high school students
-For added visibility, attach the speech bubbles to a ruler (or even a yardstick)!
-Print out multiples to gradually release responsibility to your students...this can easily become an assigned classroom job during Socratic seminars!
