The ACT Plus Writing is becoming more and more common for schools to administer. Colleges want to know that the students they are bringing aboard can write an argument.
Having taught an ACT enrichment program for several years, one thing is for certain. There are two types of students: one that does not plan out an essay at all and one that spends too much time planning and not enough time writing.
Use this presentation to help fix that problem in both types of student! Students will get used to the format of an ACT-Style prompt, learn to think of reasons on both sides of the argument (did you know that the ACT takes counter-arguments in consideration when scoring), form theses, and do all of these things quickly.
30 minutes is not a long time for students to write a 6 paragraph essay (yes, 6!), so the faster they can get when brainstorming, the more time they have to write.
I've used this presentation as a weekly bellwork assignment, but there are unlimited applications.
