My math lessons focus on student engagement and participation. I focus on developing conceptual understanding using manipulatives, specific language and activities. My lesson plans also include differientiated tasks that cater to the varying levels in the classroom.
1) To represent integers using integer chips and to understand the
concept of zero pairs
2) To use integer chips to model addition of integers
3) To discover generalizations for adding integers
The chips are great way to introduce integers and to add. I find this method especially useful for my visual and hands-on learners but it is also a good challenge for the abstract thinkers.
