Shake it! Shake it! Shake it! The Discover Jar I mean. What’s inside? Look and see. Turn it! Turn it! Look some more. What?! A bird and a butterfly? What else is inside? And so it goes. The purpose is for the students to not just discover what’s inside but to determine the relationship between the objects. I have made a Discovery Jar with objects that would generate an adjective. For instance: spider/creepy; ice cream/cold. The students’ job will be to generate adjectives for the objects inside the Discovery Jar (without you telling them unless necessary) and then being able to categorize the words they generate as adjectives. Sound fun? The kids love it!
This idea can be utilized across grade levels as all students can benefit from the use of The Discovery Jar. It can easily be an instructional tool across curriculum, also.
For example: 1st grade-science concept-5 senses. In the discovery jar place items that represent each of the senses. My 1st graders were captivated and in awe (so was my principal) when I worked in an inclusion setting and conducted this follow-up lesson!
