For this activity, students receive a card that indicates where several people are going and gives clues about what they are doing there.
Students complete the speaking activity by asking and answering questions using estar + the present progressive form of common verbs. Questions like "¿Adónde están yendo? ¿Y qué están haciendo?" This provides great opportunity for somewhat scripted yet spontaneous conversation because the students are free to create their own ideas of what each person is doing at each location. While there are some pretty straightforward ideas for lower/intermediate students (ej: Joaquin is going to the florist and he is buying flowers), if your students are higher level and are comfortable enough (and you are okay with it) they might say "Joaquin is going to the florist and he is buying a unicorn", or something completely random yet gramatically correct.
When students are finished with the communication activity and they have written down everything their partner has said, they then translate their partners responses into English.
My students enjoyed this activity and I hope yours will too! Your purchase includes worksheet/written response sheet, 4 different student speaking response sheets and answer key.
