For this activity, students receive a card that indicates where several people went and gives clues about what they did there.
Students complete the speaking activity by asking and answering questions using the imperfect tense as well as several phrases that help indicate the use of the imperfect tense. Questions like "¿Adónde iban a menudo? ¿Y qué hacían?" This provides great opportunity for somewhat scripted yet spontaneous conversation because the students are free to create their own ideas of what each person did at each location. While there are some pretty straightforward ideas for lower/intermediate students (ej: Joaquin used to go to the florist and he used to buy flowers), if your students are higher level and are comfortable enough (and you are okay with it) they might say "Joaquin used to go to the florist and used to buy hamburgers", or something completely random yet gramatically correct.
When students are finished with the communication activity and they have written down everything their partner has said, they then translate their partners responses into English.
***This activity also helps students practice the phrases that indicate the use of the imperfect tense, like generalmente, a menudo, a veces, de vez en cuando, etc.
