This PowerPoint presentation, Keynote presentations, task cards, and worksheets were designed to encourage young writers (Grades 1 and 2) to use adjectives to “spice up” their writing, or as a review for older students (Grades 3 and 4).
The PowerPoint presentation leads students through the definition, use, and position of adjectives in a sentence. Adjectives are categorized by:
• What Kind?
• How Many?
o Writing numerals as words
o Using words that define number (i.e. countless)
• What Color?
o Common colors
o Not so common colors meant to enhance vocabulary
Each classification illustrates each category of adjectives. Animations keep students engaged and serve as talking points during the lesson. The presentation concludes with several slides of landscapes and “kid-friendly” photographs. Use these slides to challenge your students to create descriptive sentences and/or paragraphs using adjectives.
NOTE: Be sure to take a look at the “Notes” section of the PowerPoint for teaching suggestions and sample sentences for each of the photographs.
Three (3) follow up activities are also included:
• Word Cards (140)
• Keynote “Magic Move” Presentation
• Worksheets for use with mentor text
Suggestions for using word/task cards are included. The Keynote “Magic Move” presentation is also included. In our classroom, the presentation is “air-dropped” to students. Students then “click ‘n drag” words into the correct classifications. Once students complete this activity, the projected Keynote serves as the answer key. The “Magic Move” animation is always a big hit with our students, and is an easy “no prep” way to integrate technology into your lesson.
BONUS: Included are two (2) worksheets designed to be used with the mentor text, “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.” After a shared read, students identify the adjectives and the nouns they describe using text from the story. They then work with partners to identify other adjectives found in the text, along with the nouns they describe. See preview for worksheet samples. The BONUS product can be purchased separately in our TPT store.
