***Playing With Catapults***
This lesson is compatible with the Kindergarten through Second Grade Next Generation Science Standards* NGSS*.K-2-ETS-1-2 and NGSS*.K-2-ETS-1-3. NGSS*.K-2-ETS-1-2 states that the student should “[d]evelop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.” NGSS*.K-2-ETS-1-3 states that the student should “[a]nalyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.

This lesson teaches students about early engineering concepts by building a simple catapult. It covers advanced topics, such as parabolas, angles, force, and gravity in ways that are simple and easy to understand.
The students will design and test two different types of catapults. They will record and analyze their data to see which worked better at shooting the same items across the room.

***Building a Truss Bridge***
This lesson is compatible with the NGSS* Kindergarten through Second Grade Engineering, Technology and Applications of Science Standard K-2-ETS1-1. The standard expects that students will “[a]sk questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.”

This lesson teaches students about engineering and physics by examining the basic structure of all bridges. They will then examine a truss beam bridge in detail. The students will learn that triangles are very strong shapes and that engineers use them in many man-made structures, such as truss bridges. They will apply their knowledge by building their own truss bridge and test its strength against a bridge without a truss.

These lessons can be used in a general education or special education classroom, in a home school setting, or as an enrichment experience.
