WHY USE Creation Corner: Self Selected Project Assessments??
It is REAL ASSESSMENT! Many times when we are teaching children we want to find out what they really learned about what you were trying to teach. This assignment gives you a very inside look into what they are thinking about the topic by allowing them the freedom to create whatever they want in order to share what they know.
It highlights Bloom’s Taxonomy of HIGHER LEVEL THINKING! Bloom’s Taxonomy of learning suggests that the highest level of thinking is CREATING! That means when your children are developing ideas to create something that will answer the questions you want answered (which they can fill in as well in PART 1 of student directions, then your children will be using higher level thinking skills.
It gives children OWNERSHIP! Children who get to decide HOW they will show what they know will be more likely to put their whole self into what they are doing. It will be theirs and they will WANT TO DO IT!
Children WANT TO DO IT! Since the children have chosen they TYPE of project they want to create then they are excited about doing it.
It highlights Gardner’s MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES Since children are getting to choose which project they want to do they often choose one that highlights their strengths. This gives them the opportunity to succeed. It helps them build confidence. It allows them to focus on sharing WHAT THEY KNOW in a fun and exciting way FOR THEM.
It puts PLANNING & RESPONSIBILITY on the children – Children have to think things through BEFORE they get going on the project. They are given LOTS of freedom, but they have to commit to WHEN they get things done and who will be their partner. They also have to decide they have the supplies that are needed to complete the project. If the supplies are not available, then the children have to either improvise with what is available, or choose a new project.
