ALPHABET PLAY DOUGH MATS
are filled with independent, hands-on learning! These sheets are perfect to use with your Letter of the Week program. Your students will not only be working on their fine motor skills, they will also learn the correct letter formation of both uppercase and lowercase letters and their sounds. They will count (1-12) objects that begin with the target sound and exercise their creativity on every page.
What you will need:
Dough (2-3 colors per student is recommended)
Dough tools: plastic knife, garlic press, cookie cutters
Silly Putty (helpful to use with Q)
Number stamps (optional)
Page protectors to cover the sheets.
The first few times you present this activity, pre-roll two of the colors into 10-12” logs/snakes (both colors for each student). Show your students how to “finish” rolling it. Show them how to lay it on the target letters—beginning at the smiley face and following the arrows to the “stop sign”—and bend, or cut it to the right shape.
Provide the third color of Play-Doh as a small pancake if you are using number stamps, or you can provide it unshaped and allow your students to use it to cover the target number. The directions ("How Many?") for this section are the same on every page (except for N where they will make nine objects of their own).
Finally, be sure to have an unshaped piece of dough available for your students to complete the creative activity on each page. The directions in this section include simple commands (like "Make This", or "Roll This") and a visual example of what they will make.
These Alphabet Play Dough mats can also be used as:
1. Letter Tracing Cards—cut out the correct letter formation frames, if desired, and laminate. Your students can practice writing each letter with a dry-erase marker.
2. Alphabet Ordering Cards—using the correct letter formation portion of each sheet, your students can put any number of cards in alphabetical order
3. Uppercase/lowercase Matching—with the correct letter formation portions of each sheet
4. Beginning Sound Mats—your students will sort classroom items on top of the correct beginning letter sheet.
