Not all your ELLs are the same!!! This packet of formative assessments and practice activities has been designed for Level 1 ELLs with limited or no literacy skills in their first language. As an ELL teacher of 15 years, I have always struggled finding resources that target early literacy skills for older ELLs. Although literacy development in older learners mirrors that of youngsters, there are some key factors that make this process significantly different. One of those factors, is their cognitive maturity level. Older ELLs feel discouraged when provided with materials used in lower grade levels. Most of the resources for early literacy instruction are designed through the lenses of English speaking young learners, with practice exercises that are very brief, unnecessarily repetitive, and illustrations and font that mainly appeal to young students. Additionally, these elementary literacy sheets include vocabulary that is assumed to be already known by the youngsters, hence don’t provide enough language support for English Language Learners.
I created this packet with those students in mind. I’ve used it in my classroom and it has helped me identify my student’s literacy levels more precisely, address their needs more effectively, and see their progress more quickly. I hope it helps your students too!
