"The scary thing about girls is that they are not boys."
Alvin's grandparents had come from China where his great-grandfather was a courageous hero who fought tigers and lions in his garden. Alvin didn't seem to take after them. He had his own LONG list of scary things that included things like girls, elevators, ghosts, and teachers. He was sure famous ghosts of people like Ralph Waldo Emerson and Louisa May Alcott lived in the nearby houses. His wild imagination continuously introduced more problems.
Life at school wasn't easy. He was so afraid of teachers and school and girls that he had never been able to utter one word in school. That made it impossible for him to read out loud when he was asked to. It made it very uncomfortable for him when he had to sit by a girl, but luckily, the girl he seemed to get stuck sitting beside was really cool with an eyepatch and peg leg. Being unable to talk made it very unlikely to ever get picked for the guys' Revolutionary war teams during recess, but they couldn't keep him from playing dead.
Luckily, Alvin Ho could talk on the bus and away from school. His sister Anibelli and older brother Calvin tried to help him overcome his fears. At home, he was Firecracker Man, a superhero. He loved it when his mother called him "poor thing" and his father called him "son," but what he really loved was watching his dad play with his favorite toy, "Johnny Astro." But, he had problems at home, too!
You will love hearing Alvin Ho tell his story. Listening in on his thoughts will make you laugh out loud. Will Alvin overcome his fears?
