Product Description

This resource includes two high-color posters to teach the nasal /a/ vowel sounds (-am and -an) as well as the welded -all word family. This product also includes 4 interactive notebook activities to help students read and spell words with -am, -an, and -all. Use this resource to help your students master these short /a/ variations in an engaging and hands-on way. This multisensory resource was designed to be used with the Orton-Gillingham Systematic Multisensory Structured Language Approach, but can be used to support phonics/word study instruction in the first grade classroom or to support intensive reading intervention programs such as the Wilson Reading System, Fundations, and SPIRE.

This Resource Includes:

  • 2 Colorful Teacher Posters (Nasal A - AM and AN Poster, ALL Poster)
  • 2 Black-and-White Student Posters for Interactive Notebooks
  • Nasal A Sounds Flapbook
  • Nasal or Not? Word Sort
  • AM Foldable
  • AN Foldable
  • ALL Foldables
  • AM, AN, ALL Picture Sort

How I Use this Resource:

  1. Introducing the Nasal /a/ Sound - I introduce the nasal /a/ sound and keywords using the colorful teacher posters and blackline student versions. I have students pinch their noses as we talk about how the short /a/ vowel sound changes when the letters m or n follow the vowel.
  2. Prescriptive Practice - I assign individual students specific interactive notebook activities to complete based on areas of need I've observed during our lessons.
  3. Literacy Center - After I've introduced the nasal /a/ sound and the -all word family, I put out additional interactive notebook activities as a choice during literacy centers. The foldables are a high-interest literacy center - especially when you put out smelly crayons or markers for students to use when coloring. :)

Reading Intervention Program Sequence:

Orton-Gillingham - Level 1

Wilson Reading System - Step 1.5

Fundations - Level 1, Unit 5

SPIRE - Level 2 (al)
