Explore the inventions that changed American in this gallery walk activity. Students will be given a primary source quotation that they will match to an invention. They then take notes on an annotated map.
CIVIL WAR AND RECONSTRUCTION
Events Leading to the Civil War Structured Debate
Students will learn about the events leading to the Civil War through a primary source visual and reading. Each event is examined through a provocative question which students discuss in a small group, then debate in the entire class. Students complete the activity by writing an essay answering different questions.
Civil War Sequencing
In this activity, students will create summaries of the different events leading to the Civil War. A graphic organizer is provided to assist your students.
The Civil War through QR Codes
Your students will analyze primary source images about the specific events during the Civil War and then they will use QR Codes to watch a video and answer questions. Your students can use their smart phones and headsets for this portion of the activity. After watching the video and discussing questions with a partner, they will annotate a map with the key events of the Civil War.
Civil War Puzzle
Review the key information on the Civil War with a puzzle.
Did Reconstruction accomplish its goals? In this activity students will examine the Reconstruction time period through primary source images, quotes and text. Students will discuss the topic - Is everyone in the United States free?
Reconstruction Review Activity
This is a Reconstruction activity to promote higher level thinking during reviews. In the "Odd One Out" students are given primary source images from which they have to analyze and develop patterns. Once they have detected the pattern, they have to identify which image is the "Odd One Out" - doesn't fit the pattern. Students are then required to write justification statements on their answer.
US History Era Review
This activity bundle is designed to help your students review for an end of the year assessment – like the STAAR for 8th Grade US History. As students are taking the test, they are required to place many questions into historical context. These activities are designed to prepare your students for that task with a variety of different review strategies.
