Allow students to explore how a peach, avocado, and a hard-boiled egg, could be used as MODELS for the Earth and its layers. Use real fruit on every table for more of a LAB activity, or simply use the pictures I've included on the lab sheet. High-order questioning such as, "do they represent the system accurately" and "are the layers in the correct position? correct temperature? same composition? accurate size when compared to one another?" will lead the students into a better analysis.
Then, students will create a Triple VENN Diagram to show their Analysis of the Models and illustrate each around the edge of its corresponding circle. Practice creating graphic organizers is always helpful to students, as they almost always encounter them on standardized assessments! Remind students that a use of color throughout their Science Journals/Interactive Notebook has been shown to add to greater recall of the Science content!
I have included a couple FREE EXTRAS-- my Plate Boundaries Vocab MatchUP CARDS, both large and small, and a Layers of the Earth Small Group Activity. I hope I have helped you to ROCK the Science in your classroom! Sincerely, Jana--Science Rocks with Smalley!
