ANY Poem - Comprehensive Poetry Assignment - Addresses: Diction, Tone, Mood, Topic, Theme, Symbolism, Imagery, Shift, Writing Response, Etc.
This assignment can be used to lead students to achieve a broader understanding of any poem- no matter how difficult. The assignment can be completed in a class period, as homework, or (may favorite) a little bit at a time over the course of a week or so (maybe as a warm-up?).
I have included the assignment, an explanation of how to complete the assignment, and an example of an 8th grade student's completed assignment over "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost.
When I use this assignment, students do a little bit of the assignment at a time, and we discuss our thoughts throughout the time that we are working on it.
I like to use this assignment about once every six weeks to "brush up" on our poetry analysis skills.
A huge benefit of this assignment is the fact that it forces the student to read the poem multiple times, every time for a different purpose. I always tell my students that poetry is not like a hamburger that you buy at McDonald's and gobble up because you are famished. Rather, poetry is like a steak- you have to chew on it for awhile, or else you won't be able to swallow it. Every time you read it again, you make it a bit more digestible. :)
