Exploring the magical world of solfa is like finding a key to unlock a door to a room full of treasures! It explains such mysteries as key signatures and melodic minor scales! Solfa offers an approachable way of recognizing pitches and their relationship to one another. While this obviously applies to singers, my purpose here is to demonstrate its usefulness in playing an instrument as well. Once students understand the Kodaly based solfa scale patterns and can sing them, they quickly learn to fit any scale into the right pattern - works like magic!! And they sing and play better in tune! Using movable d, this booklet is a good introduction to the study of scales. It presents worksheets for the major scales up to 4 sharps and flats and includes major and minor scale patterns – the “grids” upon which to build any scale. Included are work sheets and games for major scales up to 4 sharps and 4 flats and a scale modulator (like a slide ruler for scales) an invaluable tool to demonstrate how scales work. These materials are appropriate for use in classrooms and private lessons and are most helpful for students preparing for theory exam like the Royal Conservatory Preparatory Rudiments Exam. I hope you will agree – SOLFA TRULY IS THE MAGIC POTION!
