AP Language Unit Plan
This is a twenty-five day unit plan designed for Advanced Placement English Language and Composition courses, but is also easily applied to other high school nonfiction-based courses. This unit's theme is loosely based on our perception and use of language and is addressed using all three primary writing skills - rhetorical analysis, open argument, and synthesis.
Links are provided for readings with the exception of three readings that are found in the Bedford St. Martin's reader: The Language of Composition, but are also readily available online as well as in other anthologies. There are copies of readings that are accessible via Gutenberg Project in the unit plan.
The readings NOT provided in this unit, but are addressed in the lesson plans are:
* Amy Tan's "Mother Tongue"
*an excerpt from Richard Rodriguez's "Aria"
* an excerpt from Thiong'o's "Decolonising the Mind"
This plan also lays out 3 different class discussion formats as well as provides a student exemplar for rhetorical analysis and two powerpoint presentations that layout readings from Orwell and Obama. There are 18 documents in total that range from specified anticipatory sets to homework to notes.
Some readings used in this unit include:
* Michelle Obama's 2016 DNC speech
* President Obama's 2009 Inauguration speech
* President Obama's 2016 Remarks on the Shooting in Baton Rouge, LA
* George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language"
* Steven Pinker's "Grammar Puss"
* Plutarch's "A Consolation to His Wife"
