This lesson includes 20 words and definitions, an activity, and a 21-question quiz with an answer key. I used a list of 100 "need-to-know" terms for success in the AP English Language class to create several AP Vocabulary lessons for my 10th grade Pre-AP classes; however, these words and assignment and quiz could be used with a 9th grade Pre-AP class or even to start the year with an AP English Language class. This is the second 20 words. I break the 100 terms down into smaller groups to make it less daunting for the students. Mastery, not frustration and simply memorization, is the goal. I stress to my pre-AP students that these vocabulary words will be extremely helpful in the event that they decide to take AP English Language and Composition during their 11th grade year. It is important to know and understand the terminology that will be used frequently in that course and even later in college courses. In the first lesson I give the students the definitions they will see on the quiz; however, with this second set of words, I require that the students define the words themselves. I stress the importance of looking for the most literary definition. Also, they seem to truly learn the words better when they aren't simply regurgitating definitions I gave them.
