Visual Analysis Assignment
5 Novel Assessments
Definition Essay Assignment (with rubric)
As students read The Great Gatsby they will derive a definition for the American dream, offering support from Fitzgerald's text.
To use with the Robert Redford version of The Great Gatsby, students take notes as they watch and answer guiding questions to help them analyze the visual symbolism used in the movie.
Gatsby Novel Assessments
These 5 different summative novel assessments list 10 significant people, places, or symbols found in a novel. Students should be able to explain (in at least three sentences) how this person, place, or symbol was used to develop theme, tone, or purpose within the story. Each assessment is timed at 30 minutes.
See the PREVIEW: The teacher information page explains how to use these assessments and includes a sample response to use when teaching this technique to students. Each test is a Microsoft Word document, making them easy to customize if you would like to focus on different characters, places, or symbols.
In my course, students are responsible for reading the novel outside of class (over the period of about four weeks); however, these can also be used to assess novels taught in class.
