This handout is to help students walk through the process of analyzing visual rhetoric like advertisements, commercials, paintings, political cartoons, etc. I use this as part of my visual rhetoric unit, and as a stepping stone to writing analysis essays. Once the students have thoroughly analyzed the image, they can use these notes to help them write an essay. This handout used the OPTIC strategy for visual analysis, which was designed to help the process of analyzing visual texts. OPTIC stands for Overview, Parts, Title, Interrelationship, and Conclusion. In addition, this handout also uses the rhetorical triangle to help the students examine the relationship between the speaker/artist, audience(s), and subject, as well as the purpose and appeals.
