Product Description

This 26-slide PPT walks students through the process of using SOAPSTone to analyze Dunbar’s poem, “We Wear the Mask.” Slides 1-8 provide info about the SOAPSTone method. Slides 9 and 10 are the assignment, to use SOAPSTone to analyze the poem. Based on your feedback, I have one slide with a female avatar and one slide with a male. (You can delete the one you don’t want to use.) Slides 11-23 are the poem, with different elements highlighted for emphasis. The instruction slides, 9 and 10, repeat at the end. I included "Test Prep" in the description because this is one way to prepare students for the AP Lang&Comp exam. The PPT is the lesson plan. I listed the time as 90 minutes but it really depends on how long it takes your students to take notes and make observations about the poem. Mine took notes on SOAPStone the day before so those slides were a review. The assignment is to work with a partner or in small groups to use SOAPSTone to analyze the poem and then write a paragraph analysis (individually). I did not embed any sound recordings of the poem but there are many online for you to choose from. Questions are from Conversations in American Literature: Language, Rhetoric, Culture by Robin Dissin Aufses and Renee H. Shea. Happy Teaching!
