This is an assignment for students to consider multiple stakeholders and the complex issues surrounding land management.
Students play the role of land-management officials. Students enjoy being creative with their choices about how to use a huge plot of old-growth forest in Oregon, and have to think about ecology, economics, human health, and other issues while they decide how to use the land. There are no wrong answers; however, students do have to provide a description of how each stakeholder will respond to their choices.
This allows students to have fun, while learning to think critically about the consequences of human interaction with the environment.
Handout includes detailed descriptions of stakeholders (which I had way too much fun writing), and instructions for completing the assignment. I usually let them work individually, or with one partner.
