This package contains 8 units of learning objectives:
Environmental Ethics and the History of the Environmental Movement
Third Rock from the Sun: Earth Science
Land and Waste
Air and Toxicology
Energy and Sustainability
These objectives are a way for teachers to concisely communicate what students need to be able to know and do to prepare for the AP Environmental Science exam. With these objectives, students identify their incoming knowledge and skills, track their learning, and decide what to study for the unit exam. I find the transparency, accessibility, and metacognitive aspect of these objectives improves both student learning and student attitude; they enjoy learning more, as opposed to stressing about memorizing things for an exam.
These learning objectives are intended to be passed out at the beginning of a unit. Students perform Check 1 on that first day, then Check 2 about halfway through, and Check 3 about two days before the unit test. Check 1 allows students to check off what they know coming into a unit. Check 2 allows them to track what they are learning so far. Check 3 is useful for students trying to figure out how to focus their studying. It can also be useful in helping the teacher craft review activities.
I personally provide these learning objectives along with a list of vital vocabulary, homework dates, and assessment dates for each unit, but that depends on each teacher’s style. I do not pass out an additional study guide--students are expected to use this sheet as their study guide.
