AP Essay Scoring Calibration Handout & Planning Ideas
Norming essays according to the holistic AP rubric takes practice, and students sometimes struggle with what is expected of them in order to score higher. This handout breaks down major characteristics of essays so that students can notice and name the qualities of high, medium, and low-scoring essays. Flexible enough to use with any subject area (but created for AP Language and Composition), the handout is also a useful tool to create thoughtful student reflection that can lead to effective revision. Teaching tips are included to help you plan your use of this tool.
