Product Description
The class will begin with a classroom discussion on the two forms of government mentioned above in the “Do Now” question. Students, working in groups, will devise a list of advantages and disadvantages that monarchies and democracies have and complete the chart listed on the next page. They will then work on the documents, analyzing the causes of the conflict in England which was ruled by the Stuart dynasty (King James I and in particular, King Charles I) and the growing division between the monarchy and Parliament, a conflict that can be traced back to the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. By the end of their analysis, students will understand that Parliament’s ideas of governance was based on the ideals of Locke, while the English Crown formulated its power from the divine right theory as proposed within and supported by Hobbes’ work, The Leviathan.
