In this lesson, students will be working in groups, analyzing works that delve into the French Revolution, and specifically into the Reign of Terror. They will look at the works of Burke, Paine, and Robespierre. One group will analyze a secondary reading on the Reign of Terror, its purpose and the victims that fell under the despotic rule of Robespierre. All of these sources – especially the writings of Burke, Paine, and Robespierre – had different perceptions on the revolution. The students will be the historians and answer this fundamental and crucial question: “How was the revolution and the Reign of Terror viewed by those in France and in the world?” In this lesson, students will understand and appreciate that history has many viewpoints.
