In this three-day lesson, students, working in groups, will examine the collapse of the Soviet Union during Mikhail Gorbachev’s regime. The first reading that is distributed to the entire class is an overview of the reforms of Gorbachev in the 1980s and the ‘revolutions’ that occurred within the Soviet Union’s satellite nations. After reading and answering the questions, a full classroom discussion will occur that delves into the reforms that were implemented by Gorbachev and the Politburo and students will decide whether or not these policies aided in the revolutions that occurred within the satellite nations. The students will then analyze a particular ‘revolution’ that occurred within the Soviet Union and its satellite nations. Each group will then present their findings to the rest of the class. A graphic organizer is attached to this lesson to aid the students in their study of the collapse of the Soviet Union.
