The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the Short Answer Question of the AP exam and provide the students with a strategy for the rest of the year to break it down. I design my AP course using lesson objectives that double as short answer questions for the unit. These can be graded in the same 3 point method that the AP exam is graded. This lesson provides a sample SAQ response and activity to break down the response into claims/evidence and reasoning. The students then are guided to completing the next lesson objective for the unit on their own. The content for this unit is the High Middle Ages which works great at the beginning of the year, however, the activity and the graphic organizer can be used for any unit. The graphic organizers and strategy are useful and transferable for APUSH SAQs as well.
