PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

After answering the “Do Now” as a class in a discussion/forum setting, students will examine primary sources that delve into the Spanish motives for conquest, the actual conquest itself, and the perception that the Spanish had for the conquered peoples of South America. Similar to the motives of “New Imperialism” in the late 19th century (see Period 3 lesson plans), the motives for exploration and conquest were for profit, the Crown, religion and prestige. With their analysis, students will realize not only the ambition of the Spanish to conduct a war of sheer butchery and subjugation through the use of modern weaponry of the time, but also the negative perception that the Spanish had for those societies that they considered to be far inferior and foreign to their own. Students will understand that these negative perceptions have been a part of history since antiquity and ones that still exist today.
