This lesson about French rapper Disiz (aka Disiz la Peste)'s song «Jeune de banlieue» explores the themes of personal and public identities, alienation, and assimilation, through the prism of France's minorities. The song and music videos raise issues of social justice in the "banlieues" of large French cities. Students will read the song lyrics and also view the music video which is readily available on YouTube. The student activity sheet includes questions about how Disiz presents his own identity, as well as a guide to outline and discuss the stereotypes presented in the video. The lesson includes sample answers to questions in the handout. The activity can be successfully completed in class, as a homework assignment, or a combination of the two, depending on your time frame.
