This rubric breaks down the holistic description on the essay rubrics provided by the College Board for the AP Language and Composition exam essays into a 6 trait rubric. This allows students to see more specifically where they are doing well and where they need to improve as well as gives them a better idea of which areas of the essay (ideas/content, organization, diction, syntax, style, conventions) are most important. It is simple and quick for the teacher to use.
I have used this rubric for many years when I have students do practice impromptu essays as formative assessments in class. It includes a descriptor for each trait at each level (upper third, middle third, lower third). The rubric is designed so that a score of "5" is considered passing/proficient. I have taken the College Board's broad descriptions and made them more specific, and I have also included a "Do" and "Don't" quick check list with each rubric of the types of mistakes I most often mark or the types of suggestions for improvement I most often give in each trait.
I have not included a specific weight for each trait. However, I have included a note that the Ideas/Content trait is the most important one and typically determines the overall essay score. Since the file is a Word document and fully editable, you may add your add your own weighting if you choose.
I have taught several sections of AP each year for the last nine years. Typically all of my students sit for the exam and their passing rate is in the 90th percentile, with almost half of my students usually scoring in the upper quadrant on the writing portions. (In 2015, the passing rate was 94 percent, and 48 percent of my students scored in the upper quadrant on the writing portions.
