This is a wonderful strategy that I use with my advanced students - AP and Honors - but have had some success with it as a group activity with my college prep classes as well. Advanced students always want to develop their own style in writing, their own voice. Imitation is the best means and this is an easy way to focus them on the style and the rhetoric of famous writers. I teach this lesson in the beginning of the year to reinforce all we are learning about annotation and rhetoric. This five page assignment includes directions, a sample model and then five different student examples.
