Analysis Discussion Board Assignment & Revision Assignment

Hello, Friends,

When I write--and it's daily--I have others look it over and question everything, especially if it's high stakes writing! Students should have the same OPPORTUNITIES! YES, OPPORTUNITIES! Although it's typical for most students to shy away from their peers reading their writing, with appropriate encouragement and guidance, they do quite well! (To be honest, it is now difficult for me to get students NOT to share their writing with others and rely on only themselves.)

I use this assignment with Stephen King's On Writing and Janet Fitch's White Oleander. This assignment works really well with any text in which students might consider language analysis, however.

  • The first assignment asks students to choose a section of text from a book or article on which they are working and to write an analysis paragraph. The instructions are complete (step-by-step), should students want the structure, and also include a highlighted sample for additional guidance and scaffolding.
  • The second assignment asks students to choose a paragraph from an in-class writing assignment and work on higher-order revisions. In this way, students have an opportunity to analyze what they've done in a timed setting and rework the writing to include and/or revise the piece to better meet AP standards.

I like pairing these activities with in-class work with the new AP rubrics, my essay evaluation comment sheets, and round robin essay evaluation study (coming soon).
