This is a 1 - 2 class period activity that requires students to apply the three fundamental AP Language and Composition writing skills, beginning with open argument, moving into rhetorical analysis, and concluding with synthesis.

The actual assignment calls for students to respond to an open argument prompt, then annotate two poems - one by Langston Hughes, the other by Billy Collins - and conclude with taking the open argument response and material assessed in the rhetorical analysis to construct pieces of a synthesis paper.

This is a great way to solidify the difference between each writing skill as well as their interconnectivity. The results can include simply reviewing, pulling exemplars, or having students complete one of the tasks as an entire essay.
