This two day activity includes a lesson with a five step process to identify the audience of an essay. Next, there is a homework assignment (which could be completed in class if you have a 90 minute period and if you print the Roosevelt speech) and a peer review activity for the homework assignment that focuses students on the rhetoric and five step process can be applied to any speech or essay to determine audience. I use this lesson in the first month or two to get students to start applying the rhetorical situation to their own writing.
