2006 AP Language Exam Form B Rhetorical Analysis Question - Shaw: "St. Joan"
This activity uses the rhetorical analysis passage from the 2003 released exam. (It includes a PDF of the prompt.) Students use the Device-to-Meaning chart as a way of annotating, organizing and developing their analysis. These can be used as a stand alone activity, or as a pre-writing activity before they write their rhetorical analysis essay.
This is an excellent way to help students see the rhetorical moves present in a passage and then FORCE them to the next step of analyzing the "so what" significance/effect of these moves.
The documents are editable, to customize to your own teaching style or verbage. Also, some of my device-to-meaning charts include analysis of the acronym PIGSAC for the introductory paragraph (Persona, Intent, Genre, Subject, Audience, Context), but that may be removed if you do not use it.
