This exercise allows students to work in cooperative groups of three to analyze, defend, and refute claims and includes instructions, graphic organizers, and extra quotes to do on additional days.
The exercise can take any where from 10 minutes (done with one quote from a warm-up) to 90 minutes, done with multiple quotes and rotating roles.
The roles include:
Defender--who will brainstorm evidence to support the quote
Refuter--who will brainstorm evidence to refute the quote
Evaluator--who will evaluate the rhetoric of the quote and the arguments their peers used.
This exercise can be done at any time in an AP Language class or a pre-AP class as a way to practice building and evaluating arguments.
