This lecture and activity teaches your students the basic principles of Dante's 4-fold Method of Symbolism and Allegory. This idea of the great Italian poet analyzes characters on four, progressive levels. Each level asks the student to think ever deeper about the character's motivation and thinking. The lecture is interactive and the activity has students working in groups to analyze the protagonist and antagonist of the novel you are studying. Teacher instructions are included with the activity. Not only is this a great critical thinking activity, it is a great technique that students can use on the AP English Exams when asked to analyze and write about characters.
