I created an anonymous evaluation for my students to complete after they finished the AP exam. I promised the students that I would not look at these evaluations until the summer after final grades were posted so they felt that it was truly anonymous and could answer honestly. I found this document to be the most helpful in figuring out how to structure my class my first few years of teaching AP Lit.
I went into teaching AP Lit thinking I could teach the way professors in college taught, read and lecture, read and lecture. My first two years of teaching, my AP pass rate was below the national average. After creating this document and my students answering honestly about what they needed, I figured out that what I was doing was not helping my students.
I listened to what my students were telling me in this evaluation my and started creating interactive activities and pacing they needed to be successful. My last few years of teaching AP Lit and Comp, my pass rates have far exceeded the national average and have been the top scores in my district sometimes.
This course evaluation was what I needed to help my students.
