I have used this lesson with my AP Literature students in order to increase their levels of diction analysis. I have the students work with partners to identify the diction and to determine its purpose for the charts. Then my AP students write a full essay for homework where they respond to the prompt. However, this isn’t just an advanced placement assignment. I have also used this lesson with my on-level English III students in order to help them identify mood and diction within a text. Then I walk them through the analysis with purpose words and we write a short paragraph of analysis at the end. You may want to purchase my “So What Factor” handout with all my purpose words because it helps students to complete this assignment in a more thorough fashion, but this assignment can be completed without that extra purchase if you have an alternative for purpose words.
