I created this assignment when my students communicated a need for ongoing instruction in literary term function and usage. I use this in lieu of any vocabulary lists as AP Literature students don't necessarily deal with traditional vocabulary in the same way that our lower grade students do. Without a functional knowledge of literary terms and their purposes in texts, an AP Literature student cannot be successful on the final exam.
This assignment sets simple guidelines for students in the sense of what should be completed but allows a degree of autonomy in the selection of literary term, examples, and explanations. These assignments almost function as smaller, more concise essay practices. A rubric is included and is simple and easy to use. A perfectly scored response is 9 points. Simply average the points they receive out of 9 to get a score out of 100 for your gradebook.
I assign students one entry per week to be due Sunday night. This file is editable. I left my information on grading weight and submission location. Feel free to edit as needed.
