This lesson introduces students to meter (iamb, trochee, anapest, dactyl) as well as two forms: sonnet and villanelle. While these specifics are part of the learning, the lesson heavily emphasizes critically thinking about how form (with or without specific terms) creates an impact and impacts a poem's meaning. The materials in the lesson include scripted history of the sonnet, scripted modeling on paraphrasing and analyzing a sonnet (John Donne's "Batter my heart"), three worksheets/notes pages. The materials in this lesson plan are really far too much for one 90-minute class period, but can be used in a few periods, or adapted for the needs of your class.
